Cahir Castle, Cahir, Co. Tipperary

Cahir Castle is known far and wide and is one of the main attractions in the town. It is also the reason why many tour buses stop off in Cahir as they travel around the country. If you are visiting the castle you’ll find the Lazy Bean Café, the best restaurant in town, just a 100m stroll away, in the centre of the square.

Cahir Castle is located on the River Suir, centrally in Cahir town (a Heritage Town). It was once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family and is one of the best preserved of all standing castles in Ireland, retaining its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. It is situated on a rocky island on the River Suir. A visit to the castle includes an excellent audio-visual show informing visitors about the castle.

If you are visiting Cahir Castle, then the Swiss Cottage, just out the Ardfinnan road, and with a very strong connection to the castle, is also well worth a visit. You can walk to the Swiss Cottage from Cahir Castle via a lovely 4Km return route known as the ‘Coronation Walk‘.
